This is the podcast episode that gave us the idea for this story. Our focus is not on extreme penances practiced by a few holy individuals (e.g. St. Christina the Astonishing), but on what the Church has for centuries considered to be the bare minimum for all Christians. Fasting is not something we are taught to do regularly as Catholics anymore, and perhaps that’s a failing on our part.
