Our main sources for this story are compiled in a book called The Musica of Herman Contractus. The introduction has an excellent summary of his life, and Appendix 1 contains English translations of most of the contemporary biographical accounts of his life. The book itself is written by him, but it’s music theory, so it would have gone over our heads.
